January 5, 2022  —

At yesterday’s  Sarasota County Legislative Delegation meeting, the motion to take the Siesta Key Incorporation bill to Tallahassee this year failed in a 3 -3 vote.  Those voting against the motion raised several issues of concern, especially costs, and offered to work with Siesta Key to address those issues for future consideration .

January 2, 2022 —

Jan.  4th:  Legislative Delegation Public Session – 5:30 pm, 1660 Ringling Blvd. 

To demonstrate more than minimal citizen support for incorporation, Save Siesta Key urges every Siesta Key registered voter to sign a petition and drop at Davidson Drugs by Monday, January 3 so they can be delivered at the January 4 Legislative Delegation meeting.  Download a petition or pick one up at Davidson Drugs.

• Dec 29th:  Rally at 11 am, Unconditional Surrender statue
• Jan.  4th:  Legislative Delegation Public Session – 5:30 pm, 1660 Ringling Blvd. 

To raise public awareness of the January 4th Sarasota County Legislative Delegation meeting, when Legislative members will vote on whether to support a bill to allow Siesta residents to vote on incorporation, Save Siesta Key urges all to join a public rally at the Unconditional Surrender statue.

Save Siesta Key (SSK) estimated that over 100 supporters turned out for the  Walk and Rally on Sunday, December 12.  The rally was held to encourage everyone to attend the January 4th Sarasota County Legislative Delegation meeting, when Legislative members will vote on whether to support a bill to allow Siesta residents to vote on incorporation.  (Note that Siesta Key incorporation was not on the delegations’s December 13th agenda as previously planned. )

• Jan.  4th:  Legislative Delegation Public Session – 5:30 pm, 1660 Ringling Blvd.

People filled the Siesta Key Chapel to overflow at last evening’s Town Hall to show support for the right to vote to incorporate Siesta Key.   The hosting Sarasota County Legislative Delegation emphasized that it is important to continue to let legislators hear your support.  Save Siesta Key urges people to please  email and call members of the Sarasota County Legislative Delegation to express your concerns and to attend these next events :

• Dec. 12:   Walk  for Incorporation – 11 am Siesta Public Beach tennis courts.  See a map of the walk routes and further information.
• Jan.  4th:  Legislative Delegation Public Session – 5:30 pm, 1660 Ringling Blvd.

Large turnout critical for incorporation to be considered in 2022, SSK leaders say. 

For Siesta Key residents to have an opportunity to vote on incorporation, the Sarasota County Legislative Delegation must  introduce a bill in Tallahassee.  To do that, it is imperative that the Delegation see that a majority of of the community supports the initiative.  That is why Save Siesta Key (SSK) emphasizes that a large turnout at two legislative meetings is critical to get Siesta Key incorporation on the ballot:

• Dec.  8:   Town Hall to discuss Siesta Key Incorporation, 6 pm, Siesta Key                                      Chapel, 4615 Gleason Ave.  To better understand how the community feels about voting on incorporation, Senator Joe Gruters , Representative Fiona McFarland and members of the Delegation will host a Town Hall meeting beginning at 6 pm on Wednesday, Dec 8 at the Siesta Key Chapel, 4615 Gleason Avenue.  Turnout for this meeting will impact legislators’ decisions.  SSK urges the community to come out in support of the right to vote.
• Dec. 13:  Legislative Delegation Public Session – 9 am, 1660 Ringling Blvd.

To build community awareness of the need to attend the Legislative Sessions, SSK invites you to Walk for Incorporation on Sunday, December 5 and December 12, beginning at 11 am in the Siesta Beach public parking lot.     See a map of the walk routes and further information.
