June 8, 2023 —

The following information is provided by the Siesta Key Condominium Council.
Press Conference to Oppose Fish Farm Permit Change WHEN: Tuesday, June 13 at 11:30 am WHERE: Maxine Barritt Park at 1800 Harbor Drive S., Venice, FL 34285 in the pavilion next door to Venice Pier WHAT: Local speakers will explain why this offshore fish farm should be stopped and take questions from the press. WHY: This farm is a test case to attempt to open Federal Waters in the Gulf of Mexico for 20 industrial fish farms. Industrial Fish Farm Offshore Sarasota Seeks Permit Change Ocean Era recently notified the EPA that they want to change both the type of fish grown and the type of cage for the Velella Epsilon fish farm proposed offshore Sarasota. The local fingerling supplier also will no longer be used. Essentially, what remains is the location of the farm, in an area south of Siesta Key prone to hurricanes and red tide, and the company. Residents and environmental groups, including the Sierra Club, Don’t Cage Our Oceans, Suncoast Waterkeeper, Recirculating Farms, and Healthy Gulf, oppose this permit and request. |
