County Moves forward on Unlimited Density for Hotels on Siesta Key

December 2, 2023 —

Despite significant public opposition, County Commissioners voted 3-1 to advance only Benderson ‘s proposal for unlimited density for hotels on Siesta Key at their November 28 meeting. Commissioner Smith requested that all three proposals be forwarded for comparison and study, however, Commissioner Moran did not support the amendment. Commissioner Smith was the lone no vote.

The Siesta Key Association (SKA), Siesta Key Condominium Council, Siesta Key Coalition, Pine Shores Neighborhood Alliance, and many Siesta residents spoke in opposition, warning that advancing any of the proposals would significantly strain the Key’s infrastructure.

November 24, 2023 — At their November 28 meeting, County Commissioners will consider three proposals to change development regulations for Siesta Key commercial property. At least one of the proposals could allow building high-density hotels on the Key, similar to hotels that were recently ruled illegal in two court cases.  As usual, the meeting begins at 9 am in the Commission Chambers, 1660 Ringling Blvd.

Developers are requesting that their three proposed Comprehensive Plan Amendments be processed in advance of the normal annual cycle. The staff memo states, “The Board may choose to authorize all three, or one, or none of the amendments to move forward for review and consideration.”
